Urban StrategyThe proposal positions the art centre as a civic threshold between the city, public space and cultural programme, allowing the building to act as both an institution and an open public destination.
Concourse StrategyThe open ground-level concourse is conceived as a field-like public space beneath and through the building, supporting informal gathering, circulation, events, exhibitions and everyday civic use.
Cultural StrategyThe art centre combines gallery spaces with a more open public programme, allowing exhibitions, education, events and informal cultural activity to overlap.
Environmental StrategyThe proposal explores climate-responsive cultural architecture through shaded public space, open-air circulation, daylight, natural ventilation opportunities and the integration of public landscape with the building.

Salerno Art Centre is a competition entry for a new cultural building in Salerno, southern Italy. Developed by UFO Architecture, the proposal combines gallery spaces, public programme and a strong civic presence within the urban and coastal context of the Amalfi region.

The project contributes to UFO Architecture’s body of cultural competition work across Southern Italy, where museums, art centres and civic buildings are understood not only as institutions but as active parts of the public realm. In Salerno, the art centre is conceived as a building that can support formal exhibitions while also remaining open to everyday urban life.

A central idea of the proposal is the open field-like space at ground level. Rather than filling the site with a closed object, the building lifts, frames and organises an accessible public concourse beneath and through the cultural programme. This concourse becomes an urban room: a shaded civic surface for movement, gathering, informal events, temporary exhibitions and public occupation.

The ground-level concourse allows the art centre to operate at several scales. It works as an arrival space for visitors, a foyer for the galleries, a covered public square for the city and a flexible platform for cultural activity. By keeping the lower level open and porous, the project strengthens the connection between the building, the street and the wider public life of Salerno.

The gallery spaces are organised above and around this public field, creating a layered relationship between open civic space and controlled exhibition environments. The project balances the need for focused gallery conditions with the desire for a more generous and accessible cultural building, where public life is not confined to the ticketed interior.

The open concourse also has an environmental role. In the Southern Italian climate, shaded public space, air movement and protected outdoor areas are essential parts of civic architecture. The proposal uses the building form to create a cooler, sheltered ground condition that can support public activity throughout the day while reducing the dependence on fully enclosed interior space.

Salerno Art Centre reflects UFO Architecture’s interest in cultural architecture, public space and building-landscape integration. The project proposes an art centre where gallery spaces, civic life, climate-responsive design and an open ground-level concourse are developed as one continuous architectural and urban strategy.
